Ford Electric Car

The beauty of electric cars is their simplicity and lack of a complex “engine.” However, this means that they only have “one” gear to move the vehicle from 0 to 60.

Part of the fun of driving is the ability to maneuver quickly, especially with manual transmissions. How people will be able to target single gear electric cars to those who enjoy driving stick is going to be difficult.

Why Electric Cars Don’t Need Transmissions

The reason electric cars don’t need transmissions is because of their simplicity for balance. Traditional cars built with internal combustion engines need transmissions to balance and to prevent it from crossing the maximum safe speed while staying effective.

Bring in the transmission for electric cars. Although performance won’t be as energy efficient, transmissions improve driving performance with some torque. Bosch, the world’s largest supplier of car components predicts that multi-geared transmissions will soon make their way into electric cars.

Demand for Torque

Although the market is generally phasing away from manual transmissions, many people wanting to switch to electric but still needing the oomph of transmissions to pull heavy loads or cruise up steep mountains won’t have to worry as much about missing this feature.

The Tesla Roadster in 2008 attempted to make a 2-gear transmission, but it was too difficult to successfully implement. They ended up with a two-speed manual locked into second gear.

Since then, technology has obviously improved and the potential for 6-gear transmissions in electric cars is not too far off. The Audi E-Tron Phev is built with a multi-speed transmission, making it more powerful with a top speed of 80 mph. This car was built to rival the Tesla but many companies are finding it difficult to make cost-efficient electric cars.

With the success and popularity of the Tesla though, many companies are trying to find a way to make it work. For many, the key looks like it is with multi-speed transmissions.
