Is Your Transmission in Trouble? Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

This is an important question to consider, and why diagnosing problems with your vehicle’s transmission can be difficult sometimes. You might notice signs like strange sounds or erratic, reduced performance. At a simpler level, transmissions are similar to the tires on your car – over miles and years of use, the tires on your car are guaranteed to wear out. Similarly, your transmission will wear over the years and miles. Transmission repairs can be expensive, so it is best to listen to those sounds and be aware of the signs of transmission trouble. A simple inspection could save you thousands.

Come to Your Local Colorado AAMCO. The earlier you are able to diagnose a problem with your transmission, the easier it is to fix it and get you back on the road. Don’t wait until you’re in a situation where the costs outweight the benefits of repair. Find your locally owned Colorado AAMCO location or schedule an appointment with us today to get a FREE Vehicle Courtesy Check of your transmission that will identify the problem and avoid unnecessary costs.

Transmission Repair FAQ

Q: How often should I change out my transmission fluid?

A: Regardless what type of car you have, we recommend that transmission fluid should be changed every 36,000 miles or at least every 3 years. The best way to confirm that you may need a fluid swap is to check the levels. Likewise, if you are driving an older, heavy-duty vehicle you may need to service this more often.

Q: What Are Signs That Your Transmission Needs to be Inspected?

  • High RPM (over 3,500)
  • Delays in acceleration
  • Inability to reverse
  • Unusual or burnt smells
  • Check engine light
  • Difficulty shifting gears
  • Shifting gears produces a harsh response, or any strange noises.

Q: Why does transmission repair cost so much?

A: At AAMCO, we strive to keep costs low, provide you with quality parts, trusted labor, and repair your transmission the right way. The reason that transmission work is so expensive is because of the many intricacies that come with most modern automatic transmissions. Each part is individually removed, cleaned, serviced, and checked for any damage. We also service on-board computers, sub assemblies, and test to see that each functions properly.

Q: Can the weather affect my transmission?

A: Cold or hot weather can indirectly lead to a shorter life span. While you may not know this, the weather along with a combination with poor driving conditions, could greatly affect overall performance.

Q: I see red oil on the ground. What is wrong with my car?

A: Seeing this red oil on the ground is a sign that you have a leak and that your transmission is in need of a reseal.  Should you continue to drive around and ignore this leak, you will immediately feel the difference when you shift gears. You may have difficulty getting into gear or notice that your car’s performance when you accelerate. In order to prevent further damage to your engine and transmission, it is best to get help from a licensed professional. When you come in for an inspection, our trusted mechanics will inspect your transmission for any leaks and loose gaskets. Many external seals can be fixed without removing the transmission, but should your front seal need attention, a more expensive repair is required.

Q: What exactly goes into a rebuild?

A: Completely rebuilding your transmission requires a bit of time. Our highly-trained mechanics will need to remove your old transmission, inspect the numerous parts, and replace them. During this process, we clean, alter and overhaul your transmission based on your manufacturer specs.
