Picturesque Off-Road Trails You Can Do with an SUV or Car

Not all off-road trails require a serious off-roading vehicle.  If you’re looking for something you can do with a regular car or basic SUV, this list is for you.  These days in out here in Colorado most hiking trails are getting quite crowded.  While finding an amazing romantic spot with amazing vistas is easy to do, experiencing one without a ton of people can be tricky.  Even if you get up incredibly early or leave very late, chances are good if you’re within the front range mountains there will be plenty of people-especially if you’re on a well-known trail.

Enter the hidden gems of the 4x4 off road trails.  A large number of folk within the Denver metro area own a 4 wheel drive Subaru, SUV, or truck that can easily make it out to some of the most beautiful landscapes without the intense customizations needed for harder 4x4 trails.  This guide provides recommendations for amazing off-road trails near Denver that you can easily access with a regular SUV and often times a normal car.  Even if you haven’t invested in a hardcore off-roading vehicle you can still experience many beautiful backcountry spots to camp and take in the scenery!

Peewink Mountain Trail – Sugarloaf Road in Boulder (1 Hour from Denver)

This trail is perfect for those who live north of Denver and want a scenic foresty mountain drive without having to drive too far into the mountains.  Located in Boulder, Colorado this trail provides easy access for much of the front range while giving you that feeling that you’re exploring deeper in the mountains.  Once you get to the end of the trail you’ll also experience some great mountain views!  Peewink Mountain Trail is easily navigated with an SUV, and there are plenty of reports of people seeing normal cars driving on the trail.

Jones Pass Road – Off I-70 A few miles past Georgetown (1.25 Hours from Denver)

Jones Pass provides a dog-friendly area with picturesque views of snowcapped mountains and summertime wildflowers.  This road is easily accessible from Denver via a quick drive up Interstate 70 and is drivable with a regular car or SUV.  Once you reach the end of the road you’ll be at the Continental Divide trail which is perfect for a quick day hike and pictures of the beautiful mountain ranges all around you.  If you’re going on the weekends and want to avoid the traffic get to Jones Pass early!

Mammoth Gulch – Off East Portal Rd. West of Rollinsville, CO (1.25 Hours)

Bask in the beauty of aspen leave’s color changes while camping in this easy to access offroad playground.  Located very close to the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel, there are plenty of areas to camp in addition to many other trails in the area for hiking or further off-road adventures.  Continue onto Kingston Peak if you have a good 4WD vehicle with decent underside clearance for more amazing photo opportunities.

Grays and Torreys, 14ers – Stevens Gulch Road off I-70 (1 Hour)

Want to hike a 14er… or how about 2 in one day?  This beautiful 7.7 mile out and back trail lets you summit two 14,000 ft high mountains in a single hike.  There are plenty of places to camp right near the trailhead, which houses roughly 20-30 parking spots.

While this road and trail can get a bit busier than others on the list, we’ve seen people successfully navigating this road in regular cars with just front wheel drive and lower clearance during good weather conditions.  If you plan on taking a regular car up this road, try to plan to go in the summer when things are a bit drier.  You may have some trouble if you are driving with a normal car on muddy or snow-covered roads.
