Impacts from You and the Environment
Between forgetfulness and harsh environments, there are a lot of factors outside of your car’s inner workings that can cause a dead battery. Some are easier to avoid than others, but all three of these can drain your battery faster than normal, so it will help to pay attention to them.
1. Leaving a Light On
One of the most common reasons for a dead battery: leaving your headlights or a dome light on in your car when you go inside. Doing this overnight can drain even the newest battery by morning and most people have had this problem at least once in their lives. Luckily, it’s easily fixed by finding a friend, family member, or kind stranger to help jump your car.
2. Making a Lot of Short Drives
Your car battery charges while you drive, so especially if you have just run into a dead battery, a long drive will do your battery some good. Making a lot of short drives won’t allow your car battery to fully charge while the engine is running, so you won’t park with a full charge. That means you’re more likely to come back out to a dead or near-dead battery that won’t want to start easily.
3. Extreme Temperatures
Harsh weather condition, from extreme temperatures to rain or snow, can negatively impact your battery as well. In the winter, if you live in a location where temperatures drop to around or below freezing, you’ll likely notice a difference in your car’s battery life. Cold temperatures make it harder for your car battery to hold a charge and it simultaneously takes more to get your engine running. That means you’re more likely in the winter to have trouble with a drained or dead battery.

A Problem Within Your Car
Aside from external factors, there are a few key parts of your car that can cause a drained battery.
4. You Have a Bad Charging System or Electrical Problem
One possibility is a parasitic drain from a bad wire or connection in your car’s electrical system. It’s normal for certain components to always be functional, but if there’s a glitch in your wiring, it can lead to a power drain from your battery that continues while your car is off, causing a drained or dead car battery. It could also come down to your car’s alternator, which is responsible for charging your car’s battery as well as supplying power to different electrical systems. If part of your alternator is wearing out or corrupted, it can easily drain your battery.
5. You Have Dirty or Corroded Battery Connections
To an extent, you can fix this yourself. When you open the hood of your car and look at the battery, you’ll be able to tell whether your battery connections are overly dirty or corroded. If they are, you can clean them up with a bit of baking soda and water and that will help the battery charge better and more effectively power various functions for your car. You can also take your car to a mechanic to have them clean the terminals and connections, as well as test the car battery to see how much life it has left before needing replacement.
6. Your Car Battery is Old
Sometimes, the reason for a car battery frequently being drained or dying is simply that it is old. As a battery ages, it’s less and less able to hold a charge, which means it will take less time to completely lose its charge. It may die overnight even if you don’t accidentally leave a light on. If this is the case, you can easily get a car battery replacement with your local mechanic or even some auto part shops.
