The added gears to late model vehicles are in an effort to meet the fuel mileage requirements. Some manufacturers went to CVT (continuously variable transmissions), some added gears. The purpose is to try to ease engine stress and revving to improve mileage. In theory, the more gears, the easier it is on the engine...but honestly there is very little difference in performance and mileage between the two, especially out on the highway. Honestly, driving habits have more to do with fuel economy that the number of times your transmission shifts.

What is the difference between an 8-speed transmission and 6-speed transmission vehicle?
What really is the advantage of 8-speed cars?
Is speed the same as the number of gear speed.
