- Sputtering Noises
- Brake Pad Misalignment
- Leaks
Your vehicle’s axle comprises of a drive shaft or steel transaxle that connects the wheels to the engine, steering and transmission. Power and torque are transferred via the axle to the drive wheels. Though the main function of axles is to make the tires spin, some axle configurations are more complex than others. For instance, vehicles with split axles utilize CV joints to ensure independent suspension of each wheel.
Hitting the curb or a bump can damage an axle. Overloading, a bad carrier bearing or collision can also damage an axle. If you start experiencing odd noises or your tires simply refuse to spin you need to visit AAMCO Colorado to have your axle and other systems examined.

Signs That Your Car Needs Axle Repair
Here are some common signs that signal towards a broken or damaged axle:
1. Vibrations
Though you may experience vibrations due to a number of automotive problems, axle damage causes an intense shaking sensation. However, to be sure its an axle problem you can drive slowly to detect the location of the strange vibrations. Axle problems are rather apparent during acceleration or cornering. Even at low speeds you will experience a radiating vibration from the undercarriage and near a tire. If the axle is bent driving will be sluggish and steering may not be responsive.
2. Vehicle Won’t Move
The most obvious indicator of a damaged or broken axle is car tires that won’t rotate. The engine will turn on, no dashboard warning light or electrical malfunctions but your car won’t just move. This type of axle problem often occurs after some sort of collision due to an axle that has snapped.
3. Vehicle Strain
Car axles are built to be resilient, but when an axle is under pressure you can feel it through the gas pedal. If your car axle is warped or damaged your vehicle will begin to strain. It will become sluggish and once you engage gears, you’ll notice that power isn’t being transmitted to the wheels. A straining vehicle doesn’t always indicate that you have a damaged axle. However, it’s a common sign and is usually accompanied by classic signs of axle damage.

4. Sputtering Noises
As your vehicle strains to move you may also experience sputtering, clunking or bumping sounds. These sounds are emitted because the axle is incapacitated and incapable of transferring adequate power to the wheels. These sounds are quite pronounced when the car begins to move or when the wheels are turning.
5. Brake Pad Misalignment
You’ll start experiencing some braking issues if your axle is damaged. Brake pads may begin to shift and become misaligned with the rotors and wheels. If this happens you may notice your vehicle skidding or slipping to a stop. Over time your brakes may cease to function.
6. Leaks
The brake seal on your car’s driveshaft may shift causing small leaks of oil. This is quite noticeable when you examine your brake drums. Axle CV joints may also leak grease and if this happens, they will dry out and wear abnormally.

Thought of a scenario where your damaged axle breaks? You may be quite lucky and your vehicle simply refuses to move out of your driveway. However, if you’re not so lucky the wheel bearings may seize while you’re driving. The entire wheel and tire may fall off leaving you with a vehicle that’s out of control.
This is a risk you don’t want to take. This is why you should get in touch with AAMCO Colorado for all your axel repair and auto repair needs.
