Suspect your muffler may be damaged?
Bring your car into your local AAMCO Colorado Today.
What seems like a small problem can become much more serious over time.
Your Muffler Does More Than Volume Control
There are two key purposes your muffler serves. While one is more cosmetic, the other plays a big role in your car’s overall performance.
Reduces Noise from Your Engine
Most people probably know that one purpose of your car’s muffler is to reduce the noise produced by your engine. While this doesn’t affect the performance of your car, it is annoying if your engine sounds louder than it should. It’s also a symptom of a potentially more serious problem with your muffler.
Controls Your Engine’s Backpressure
Your muffler also controls backpressure, which improves the engine’s endurance and performance. Basically, backpressure is created by the engine’s valves colliding and cancelling each other out. If they aren’t operating properly, it can have a big impact on your car engine’s performance.
How Can You Tell When You Have a Muffler Problem?
Symptoms of a problem with your muffler can range from relatively inconsequential to potentially life-threatening, so it’s important to pay attention when you notice anything.
Common Muffler Problems & Symptoms
The two most common muffler problems are rust and holes or loose parts. Over time, any of these problems can arise due to normal wear and tear from driving your car, though there are also some factors that can escalate them. Weather and driving habits can increase the likelihood of these problems, but you can also keep an eye on your muffler relatively easily because it is mostly visible on the underside of your car.
You can also pay attention for a few symptoms that there is a problem with part of your muffler and exhaust system. These include:
- Engine is louder than usual
- Lower fuel efficiency
- Condensation in the exhaust pipes
- Bad smells
Don’t Ignore A Possible Problem with Your Car’s Exhaust
Especially in warmer temperatures, if you notice your exhaust dripping, it’s likely a symptom of a larger problem with your exhaust system. Bad smells, especially inside the cabin of your car, can indicate a leak in your exhaust system. Either of these symptoms are a sign you should take your car in for muffler repair service to help prevent a bigger problem.
In particular, if you notice strange smells in the cabin of your car, don’t hesitate to get it checked out. If you have an exhaust leak causing exhaust to enter the cabin of your car, this can be a potentially lethal problem when left unaddressed. A third purpose of your muffler is to direct exhaust fumes away from the cabin of your car. This is because exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, which is fatal over time, especially in larger quantities.
Don’t neglect taking care of exhaust system repairs. They can cause more problems than just failing an emissions test.
Snow, Ice, and Potholes are Hard on Your Muffler
To understand what can cause the most damage to your muffler and exhaust system, it helps to know where they are located. Parts in your exhaust system are on the underside of your car, meaning they’re susceptible to damage from rough terrain – whether your car is used for off-roading or you live in an area riddled with potholes, both can cause damage.
During the winter months, snow and ice on the roads can also cause problems with your muffler and exhaust system. Buildup on roads can knock against parts on the underside of your car, leading to dents, cracks, and loose parts. Plus, kicking up extra moisture on the underside of your car can encourage rust growth, especially when combined with the salts often used to help melt snow and ice on winter roads.
It’s important to keep an eye on your exhaust system and be proactive about addressing any issues you notice coming up.
