3 Warning Signs Your Shocks & Struts Need Replacing
Shocks and struts are part of your vehicle’s suspension. Your suspension essentially connects your car’s body to the wheels.
The suspension system consists of your tires, springs, struts, shock absorbers and linkages. It helps absorb all the bumps and potholes you run over while driving.
Over time, after a certain amount of miles your car routinely needs new struts and shocks. Worn out shocks and struts can be dangerous. Replacing them can help your car have better control and increased stability, even help you stop sooner.
AAMCO Colorado mechanics are the experts in suspension repair. Don’t wait until your suspension puts you in danger, bring your car into one of our shops today.

Signals Your Shocks & Struts Are Going
Bouncy Ride
If your car has shocks, the coil springs are mounted separately from the shock absorbers. You’ll find the coil springs between the wheels and the car frame. However, struts are a little different. Struts are a coil spring and shock absorber combined. When you drive your car and hit a bump, your car bounces on the springs whether you have shocks or struts.
Shock absorbers absorb the force and prevent your car from continuously bouncing. If you find that when you drive your car over a bump and it is bouncing a lot afterward, this is a sign of bad shocks or struts.
Leaking Fluid
Inside your shocks, there is a piston and hydraulic fluid. Your shocks or struts compress while you are driving which results in the piston pushing against the hydraulic fluid which absorbs the piston’s force.
Over time, hydraulic fluid could leak out of your shocks or struts. A small amount of fluid leaking isn’t problematic.
You only need to be concerned if the entire shock or strut looks saturated in hydraulic fluid.
Schedule a diagnostic with AAMCO Colorado today. We will assess the health of your suspension system and perform any needed repairs. You’ll be back on the road in no time flat.
Tires Wearing Unevenly
When your shocks and struts are going bad, it can cause the tires to bounce up and down as you drive. Every time your tires hit the ground, small pieces of rubber get rubbed or scraped off.
This can sometimes be referred to as scalloping or cupping. Instead of your tires wearing evenly, you may find smooth patches throughout the tread. The parts of your tires that have been scraped off tend to smooth over time as you drive.
If you see signs of your tires being scalloped or cupped, it is probably time to bring your car in. AAMCO Colorado can perform a Vehicle Courtesy Check of your vehicle and find the exact cause of your tires wearing unevenly.
