Why Is My Car Using So Much Oil

Oil – Important for Your Car’s Basic Functions

Motor oil has a very important role to play when it comes to your car working properly. Oil is a lubricant used in combustion engines to prevent excessive wear, keep components clean, and to keep the engine cool. When parts in the engine are moving, keeping them lubricated prevents friction which can inevitably cause some major issues if ignored. Occasionally, vehicles may consume significantly more oil than they have previously. We are going to take a look at why this could be happening in your car and what you should do a out it.

What is the The Usual Cause of Burning Through Engine Oil?

The bottom line is this: there could be any number of reasons why your car is going through so much oil. It may be safe to assume that there is a leak somewhere in the line. This is especially true if you are able to clearly see motor oil underneath your vehicle. Motor oil can be quickly identified based on the color of the fluid you see. Oil tends to be a darker shade of brown but can be closer to black if the oil is older. If a leak is the problem, you should have this fixed right away before trying to address any other issues which may be present.

Some makes and models may require you to top off the oil before your next scheduled oil change. This is not abnormal but is something to be aware of if you’re having to add oil repeatedly. Engines are supposed to consume oil at regular intervals, so if you notice the levels are on the lower side, add more oil and watch to make sure the level doesn’t decrease too quickly.

Is My Car Burning Oil?

When an oil seal or gasket is worn, or exposed to high heat, oil may leak. If the engine is not able to contain the oil, it will leak onto other engine components which will likely create a burning smell. If you have been aware of this smell, you should not wait to see if your oil levels are depleted over any amount of time. This is an issue that should be addressed by a trusted professional sooner than later in order to avoid costly repairs.

If you’re not convinced the issue is a leak, there is another way to test the theory. Run your engine for a few moments and press the accelerator. Do you see smoke coming from the tail pipe? If this smoke has a slightly bluish tint, you are absolutely dealing with a leak. This symptom is one that warrants a mechanic’s expertise – bring your car in to get checked out ASAP.
