If you drive a manual transmission truck, then you have probably noticed they aren’t as popular as they once were. According to a recent survey, manual vehicles only account for 2 percent of all new cars sold in the U.S in 2018. Therefore, if you own one, you need to be mindful of its maintenance.
While there’s quite a lot to say about driving an automatic transmission vehicle today, every manual transmission truck owner has their reasons for opting to own a manual truck. While a bunch of reasons is not rooted in fact – manual transmission vehicles are more fuel economical than automatic transmission vehicles. You also get more control over your vehicle, and they are also theft deterrent. Lastly, there’s no denying that manual transmission vehicles are more fun to drive than their counterparts.
What Problems Can My Manual Transmission Truck Encounter?
There are a few key issues that often cause problems with manual transmission vehicles. For starters, your clutch could get worn, or your transmission could be misaligned. Either of the issues can cause poor shifting of gears, chatter, or vibrations or make the shifting process harder than usual. So, what can I do to maintain the life of my truck’s manual transmission system? Well, it’s a matter of what your manufacturer recommends. It’s recommended that you schedule a regular maintenance service with your local AAMCO Colorado auto care service or check your owner’s manual for advice on how to maintain your transmission.

What Factors Can Affect the Life of My Truck’s Manual Transmission System?
Using Incorrect Fluid
Every manual transmission system requires a specific type of fluid and grade to run effectively. This fluid works by surrounding the gears and transferring the heat that enables them to move smoothly without causing wear in the process. Using incorrect fluid due to a leak or maintenance could alter the shifting feel and cause slippage. The result could be too little or too much heat, which will ultimately lead to parts wearing down faster than usual, leading to failure.
Clutch Slippage
When looking to slip the clutch, you slowly lift your foot from the accelerator so that the clutch is engaged, however, don’t fully use it to engage gears. This mostly happens when trying to ease into gear or stopped on an incline. It strains the clutch causing it to overheat, significantly affecting the life of your truck’s manual transmission. On the contrary, grinding gears has far less effect on the life of your transmission. This situation happens when your half-engage your clutch or shift without fully disengaging, which results in an awful grinding noise. You’ll need to grind your gear for more than an hour to cause any harm to your transmission’s longevity.
Engine braking
Downshifting your manual transmission truck for braking instead of using your braking system will work positively on the longevity of your brakes but negatively on your transmission. Instead, shift into neutral, release your clutch, and then engage your brakes.
Aggressive driving habit
Your truck is a workhorse by design, but don’t confuse its physical construct for a sports car. If you are raving harder than normal and dropping your clutch suddenly, you are causing wear on your manual transmission’s parts such as the clutch, flywheel and release bearing.
How to Maintain Your Trucks Manual Transmission System
The following are tips that will help you maintain your truck’s manual transmission system, potentially preventing a breakdown.
- With each gear shift, completely lift off the clutch In simpler terms, do not ride the clutch. Riding on the clutch is a bad habit since it puts undue strain on the clutch and gearbox.
- Service your vehicle’s cooling system periodically. Your truck’s cooling system prevents your engine from overheating, but what you might not know is that it also ensures that your transmission fluid pumped through the gearbox gets cooled too.
- Schedule a routine transmission flush. A professional mechanic will best conduct a transmission flush service. Check your owner’s manual for more information, but in general, your vehicle’s transmission needs to be flushed once a year. It also depends on how often you use your truck in general.
- Avoid downshifting when you need to slow down. Despite popular opinion, downshifting as you slow down is not good for a manual transmission truck. Downshifting puts a lot of strain on the transmission, instead, use your braking system to slow down.
- Schedule a routine transmission maintenance service. Getting a qualified professional auto service center to check your transmission for leaks and other abnormalities once in a year, as well as observing transmission smell, color, and level is a smart preventive maintenance habit for your manual transmission truck.
