Check on Your Car’s Battery
The heat can be just as hard – if not harder – on your car’s battery than winter’s cold temps. Sitting in the heat and sun can cause more wear on the battery, limiting its ability to hold a charge and then power your car. You can minimize this by keeping the car in a garage and doing a visual check on the battery, mount, and attached cables. Look for excessive rust, corrosion, dirt, grime, or any damage that may make it even more difficult for the battery to do its job. You can also schedule a car battery service to have it checked by a mechanic and replaced if necessary.
Get an Oil Change
If you skipped an oil change in the spring, you’re likely due for one before the end of summer. Oil changes should be scheduled every six months at a minimum and more frequently if you drive more often or in dusty, dirty conditions. An oil change will help your fuel economy as well as ensuring the inside of your engine is properly lubricated, lowering the chances you’ll need an expensive engine repair service.
Make Sure Your Tires Are Ready to Go
Take a look at your tires, both the treads and the tire pressure. If your tire treads are over-worn, you run the risk of blowing a tire, especially if you’re headed out on a long road trip. Your tires are also more susceptible to blowouts in the summer if they’re over-inflated. The heat will add to the air pressure in your tires, so warmer outside temperatures plus friction from the road can be dangerous unless your tires are at a safe pressure.
Take a Look at Your Brakes
While you’re looking at your tires, make sure your brake pads have plenty of pad left. If they have less than 4mm thickness left, it’s time to schedule a brake service to get new brake pads and, if there’s a ridge around the outside of your rotors, fresh rotors as well. Especially if you plan to take trips to the mountains this summer, you want to make sure your brakes will be able to do their job and keep you safe.
Top Off Any Fluids That Seem Low
It’s a good idea at least seasonally to check all of your fluid levels. Your oil and coolant levels should not get lower with use unless you have a leak that needs to be addressed. However, they will become contaminated with use, so it’s a good idea to check on how they look. If either looks grungy, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your local mechanic. While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to always make sure you have windshield wiper fluid to maintain visibility.
Have Your AC Checked Before the Heat Hits
The last thing you want in the heat of summer is for your car’s AC to suddenly go out. Especially if you’ve noticed signs that part of your air conditioning system could be wearing out, such as blowing warm or hot air, it’s a good idea to get it serviced this time of year. It’s tough to notice leaks in the air conditioning system but they can lead to more damage if left unchecked.
