Symptoms of a Bad Oil Pressure Sensor

How Does An Oil Pressure Sensor Work?

The primary function of your oil pressure sensor is to monitor your engine’s oil pressure and transmit this information to the cluster gauge on the instrument panel. Most modern cars come with an electronic control module, which the oil pressure directly communicates to.

When there is a problem, the oil pressure sensor will forward the information to the car electronic control module for calculation. The module will trigger the instrument cluster panel, and the engine oil pressure warning light will be illuminated.

Signs Of A Faulty Oil Pressure Sensor

Like many computer-controlled systems in your car, should something misfire there is always a set triggered response. In case there is a problem with your car’s oil pressure sensor, it will activate the engine oil pressure light. In some cases, it could also trigger inaccurate reading from the oil pressure gauge. The following are a few signs your oil pressure gauge could be faulty:

Oil Pressure Sensor

Oil Pressure Light Is Illuminated

Your car’s oil pressure gauge will give a good indication of the overall oil levels in the engine. In case the Low oil light comes on, and you check the oil and find its okay, then you certainly have a faulty oil pressure sensor. When the oil pressure sensor is defective, it will give inaccurate readings. The quicker you replace the sensor, the less stress you will have to check your oil levels in your vehicle.

Oil Pressure Light Continuously Blinks

When your oil pressure sensor is about to fail, the Low Oil light will blink on and off. This can be quite frightening to a car owner since low oil could cause significant damage to an engine. Continually checking your engine oil is not only time consuming but also stressful. Rather than frequently stressing over your oil levels, contact a qualified mechanic such as one from AAMCO Colorado and have them replace your oil pressure sensor.

Oil Pressure Gauge Giving Wrong Readings

If you own an older car, it could likely have a mechanical gauge monitoring your oil levels. When your oil levels are normal but your gauge is pointing at zero, it could mean that your oil pressure sensor needs to be replaced because it is giving inaccurate readings. It could also be a sign of a connection problem.

If you own a modern car and your oil pressure gauge uses an electronic signal to get a reading, when the oil pressure sensor is bad, it will throw off strange readings. It could either sit at full or zero. It is advisable to check the sensor wiring or replace the sensor as needed.

You mustn’t assume your engine oil level is low without physically confirming with a dipstick. Otherwise, it could mean having too much engine oil in your car, which could set off an entirely new set of issues.
