The Keep Your Engine Purring
Don’t let terrible sounds like engine knock prevent your car from being the mighty machine that you know it to be. Trust in your local AAMCO Colorado service center to help you out.
A Few Problems Can Cause Engine Knocking
Engine problems are scary but there are a few relatively simple solutions to engine knocking. Any auto repair shop should be able to diagnose the problem and get it fixed easily if you take your car in right away when you notice signs. The earlier you take your car to a mechanic, the lower your chances of running into major repair costs.
Using Low-Octane Fuel
Every car is different when it comes to which fuel type to use, so it’s important to read your owner’s manual if you’re unsure. Generally speaking, higher octane fuels are better for your engine, though they aren’t always required. This is an easy, at-home way to try fixing engine knocking. If upping your octane level in your fuel doesn’t help, however, you’ll have to look to another solution to prevent engine knocking from growing into a larger engine repair.
Your Spark Plugs are Bad
Basically, your spark plugs ignite the fuel/air mixture in your engine’s cylinders. If you have the incorrect spark plugs installed or yours are wearing out, it can cause engine knocking along with several other problems. Generally, replacing your spark plugs is a simple and inexpensive car repair and it can have a positive impact on how well your engine runs, as well as fuel economy. If you’re handy with at-home car maintenance, you can attempt to do it yourself. Otherwise, a quick appointment at your local mechanic should fix the problem.
Carbon Deposits on Your Cylinders
Whenever you fuel up at a gas station, there is a certain amount of added detergent being put into your fuel system. That’s because the fuel in the United States is required to add detergent to help prevent carbon deposits in your engine cylinders. As carbon deposits grow, there’s less room for the necessary air and fuel to keep your engine running properly. Even with detergents, you will get buildup over time, so having them checked every so often will ensure you prevent serious damage. It’s recommended you have your cylinders checked roughly every 100 hours of operation and if you have carbon deposit buildup, they will have to be cleaned by a professional.
What’s the Risk with Engine Knocking?
Once you start noticing engine knocking, you’re not far off from more serious damage to the inside of your engine’s cylinders. Every time you hear a ping or knock from your engine, there is the unusual force being put on part of the inside of your engine and over time, that will cause damage to those parts. While getting an engine repair done to stop engine knocking may be stressful, it’s much better than letting it go on long enough that you need a more serious and expensive auto repair service.
