Top 5 Symptoms of Car Radiator Damage
Here are some common symptoms that indicate that your radiator may be damaged.
- High Temperature Gauge Readings
- Coolant Leaks
- Coolant Discoloration
- Cabin Heater Not Working
- Blocked Radiator Fins
As your vehicle’s engine runs it emits tons of heat. The purpose of a radiator is to cool the engine hence preventing it from overheating. The engine utilizes coolant to absorb this heat and transfer it to the radiator where its dissipated. The coolant is then circulated back to the engine where the process starts all over again.
If your radiator is damaged, clogged or malfunctioning your engine won’t get cooled efficiently. This will result to overheating and if the problem isn’t addressed promptly enough permanent damage can occur.

Some of The Common Signs of a Damaged Radiator
Here are some common symptoms that indicate that your radiator may be damaged.
1. High Temperature Gauge Readings
You will know something’s wrong with your radiator when you start getting higher readings on your temperature gauge. New cars display a digital temperature reading and warn you when engine temperatures get too high. The normal temperature range for most cars is between 195° to 220°F. Sometimes a slight rise is normal during hot summer months, but if you get consistent high readings your radiator could be clogged or damaged.
2. Coolant Leaks
Your radiator’s housing or cooling fins may develop tiny cracks over time. If this happens you may see drops of coolant on your driveway or garage floor. If coolant is leaking, you’ll get a low coolant warning on your dashboard indicating that your engine is operating with an insufficient amount of coolant. If this happens it’s important that you schedule an appointment with AAMCO Colorado to have the problem fixed. This can save you expensive repairs caused by an overheating engine.
3. Coolant Discoloration
Engine coolant is usually bright green, yellow, red or pink depending on the brand. For effective cooling it should flow freely throughout the radiator and coolant channel. However, with time internal deposits can contaminate coolant forming sludge. This can give it a rusty dark color.
Contaminated coolant has a thick consistency, it doesn’t flow easily through the system and may start to clog your radiator. This greatly reduces the efficiency of your radiator. If you are experiencing this our experts at AAMCO Colorado will examine your vehicle’s cooling system and determine what kind of service will be required.

4. Cabin Heater Not Working
A vehicle’s heater operates by circulating hot coolant via the heater core. A blower fan then blows the warm air into the cabin. However, if coolant is leaking or the radiator is clogged not enough coolant gets to the heater core. If the passenger’s side of your vehicle’s cabin doesn’t warm up properly, there is a high possibility that your radiator is damaged. This could also indicate that your vehicle’s thermostat is faulty. This is why you should visit AAMCO Colorado for the problem to be accurately diagnosed and fixed.
5. Blocked Radiator Fins
Fin-like tubes run across the front of your radiator to cool hot coolant. The radiator fan pushes air from outside onto the fins. As this happens dirt, leaves, bugs and other debris can block the fins. Most of the time this debris can be washed away. However, if the blockage doesn’t wash off you will need to visit AAMCO Colorado for our professionals to sort out the problem.
