Top 10 Causes of Transmission Trouble
When your car starts acting weird, you notice. Do you hear strange sounds or is there a strange smell coming from the engine or under your car? Is it handling differently than usual when you drive around town or on the highway? It is important to properly diagnose the cause of these issues and identify any problems as w. Below are some of the tops reasons or signs that your car needs transmission repair:
Top Signs Your Transmission Might Be Failing
AAMCO is the most trusted name in transmission repair and we’ve got over 50 years in business to prove it. What sets us apart is our comprehensive diagnostic approach, in addition to extensive knowledge and expertise on all things transmissions. We can pinpoint the root of your transmission issue and get it fixed right. Your car’s transmission might need repair, or at least a checkup, if it is showing any of the following symptoms:
- Transmission won’t go into gear or stay in gear.
When you put your car into gear and it won’t move, this might be due to low transmission fluid. This is usually caused by a leak, but can also occur if the fluid is really sludgy and thick, or has burned and dissipated. Other causes could be the shifter, shifter cable, or even the valve body of your automatic transmission. Newer vehicles depend on a series of computers to keep it running smoothly, and the transmission could be experiencing computer problems. If the computer is failing to tell the transmission when to go into gear based on your selection, you will definitely experience problems. You might need to have the computer system checked for trouble codes.
- Shifts are delayed or missing gears.
If the transmission takes a while to go into gear, you may have a low transmission fluid condition because of a leak or contamination (which is usually due to lack of maintenance or possible water getting in during off road or flood conditions). While this may not sound serious, it can cause the transmission to overheat and damage vital internal parts. Other causes of your transmission not shifting smoothly could be engine related, again caused by faulty parts, bad fluids, poor maintenance, or a malfunctioning computer.
- Transmission slipping or engine is revving high.
This condition can also be caused by low transmission fluid, contamination due to lack of maintenance or water intrusion, or internal wear and tear on the transmission parts inside the transmission. A high revving engine is a typical sign that you have worn clutches or other parts inside the transmission going bad.
- Transmission fluid is leaking.
A red fluid under the vehicle is a sign that you probably have a transmission fluid leak from one of the cooler lines, a gasket or a seal. This is not only bad for the transmission but is also dangerous if the fluid leaks on a hot pipe or other surface. Check your dipstick for proper fluid level and condition. Note: not all transmission fluid is red and not all levels can be verified with a dipstick method, but require specials tools.
- If there’s a burning smell.
A burning smell is usually caused by a fluid leak or in some cases by low fluid causing a burning clutch smell. If you catch the fluid leak in time, you might be able to save the transmission from damage. Check your transmission dipstick per the owner’s manual instructions for fluid level and condition.
- If there is buzzing, clunking, humming noise.
A buzzing, clicking, humming, roaring noise from inside the transmission is usually a symptom of a bad bearing, damaged planetary gears, or other internal problems. A buzzing could also come from a bad internal seal or low transmission fluid due to a leak.
- Car has no power.
If your vehicle has little or no power and the engine is running fine, this could mean internal transmission problems. On the lighter side, it might just be a case of brakes that are dragging due to a faulty caliper or brake hose, or the car’s computer is limiting power to protect the engine due to a problem it has detected (see check engine light). Have the vehicle checked for trouble codes to isolate the problem.
- Check Engine Light or Over Drive Light is on.
A check engine light can mean things, and is not limited to just the engine itself. The check engine light can also tell you that there are problems with the transmission such as overheating, solenoid issues, speed sensors, slipping and many other problems. If you get a check engine light in combination with some of the symptoms listed here, you should have the trouble codes retrieved with a diagnostic scan to see what systems and circuits are having problems. While not all sensor related codes mean a sensor is bad or that a new sensor will fix the issue, a diagnostic scan will give you a starting point for getting to the problem.
Manual / Standard Transmissions:
- Gears grind when shifting
If your transmission grinds when shifting gears this is typically a condition related to a number of factors:
- the clutch not releasing,
- the shift synchronizer rings inside the transmission itself worn or broken, or
- a shifter wear or adjustment problem.
Transmission oil/fluid that is low, dirty or the wrong fluid can also cause this problem in manual transmissions.
- The clutch pedal grabs very low or very high
A clutch pedal that engages really low, as when the pedal is all the way to the floor, is typically a problem with the linkage or hydraulic system that operates the clutch. A simple adjustment or bleeding might solve this if there are no hydraulic leaks. A clutch pedal that grabs very high could be in need of simple adjustment, but there is a chance the clutch disc and/or pressure plate are worn out.
