What is the difference between each type of transmission in cars?
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) VS Automatic VS Manual VS Hybrid Transmission
Your transmission in your car performs the basic task of controlling the application of power (Torque) being sent from your engine to your drive-wheels. It does this by using a series of gears or gears and pulleys to shift between speeds to match the environmental situations. The way CVTs, Automatic transmissions, Manual transmissions and Hybrids perform this function of changing the gears is different in each type. Automatics, CVTs and Hybrid transmissions shift automatically without driver input, while manual transmission uses a combination of a clutch and stick-shift to change gears. They all need regular maintenance to continue functioning, no matter how different they are from each other. Schedule an appointment with AAMCO Colorado for a free multi-point transmission inspection and keep it running smoothly for years to come.
What are the basic functions of all vehicle Transmissions?
One of the most important parts of your vehicle, the car transmission performs the basic function of channeling the power generated by by your engine to the wheels. It needs to adjust the amount of power in an efficient way and uses this by mechanically shifting the different gears (or pulleys in the case of CVTs). Often referred to as a gearbox, the transmission does this task of regulating the power and speed of your wheels in slightly different ways depending on what type of transmission you have (manual transmission, automatic transmission, continuously variable transmission (CVT) or hybrid transmission).

Transmission going bump in the night?
Extend the life of your vehicle by regularly maintaining your transmission.
Manual Transmissions
The manual transmission uses a combination of a clutch and a stick-shift to allow the driver to manually change gear ratios. This generally makes the manual gearbox vehicles more interactive and fun to drive as well as making them cheaper to purchase and own, but they tend to be less gas efficient due to human error when shifting. These are the most commonly used transmission type globally. They work by disengaging the clutch with the pedal, disconnecting the flow of power to the gears while you shift which protects the gears from possibly being damaged. Stick-shifts have a less smooth drive than automatic and CVT transmission vehicles and are more difficult to learn.
Automatic Transmissions
Automatic transmissions are a relatively new technology compared to how long manual transmissions have been around, but are quickly becoming the most popular due to how easy they are to learn and drive. As the name suggests, this type of gearbox requires no driver input, automatically shifting between gears, keeping driving smooth. The automatic cars have two-pedals that make it impossible to stall the car engine due to their configuration. They have more gear that help with acceleration and improve fuel efficiency.
CVT Transmissions
There are pros and cons to using a CVT, but some automakers are using continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) because they are able to get the maximum power out of smaller engines (or batteries in hybrids). The CVT uses a pulley and belt system instead of gears; this allows it to provide an infinite number of ratios for any situation. They tend to be quicker and more responsive when accelerating and are usually used with vehicles having four-cylinder engines. CVTs are smoother when accelerating and climbing hills and are lighter in weight than their manual and automatic predecessors. CVTs, however, are known to sometimes be excessively loud or harsh; this is caused by the transmission forcing the engine to spin at higher RPMs (revolutions per minute) as the vehicle accelerates.
Hybrid Transmissions
Hybrid Transmissions, found in the aptly named Hybrid vehicle are typically just a variation on the CVT transmission. This is because the CVT is better at getting the most power out of smaller engines and batteries. However, hybrid transmissions differ in that the hybrid drive-train uses two separate power sources to move the vehicle forward depending on the mode of driving. As load conditions change, the hybrid vehicle’s computer system switches controls from the engine to the battery, from the battery to the engine or a combination of both to increase efficiency. One interesting thing about the transmissions found in hybrid vehicles is that the power generated by the wheels while braking is converted to electricity by the transmission and used to charge the battery.
Think You Might Have Transmission Problems?
One thing that is the same in all types of transmissions from manual to hybrid is that they need regular maintenance to continue functioning properly. Each type of transmission functions differently in your vehicle, however, they all need regular maintenance to continue working at all! Be sure to change transmission fluid at the suggested intervals in your owner’s manual. Bring your vehicle in to your local AAMCO Colorado for automatic, manual, hybrid and CVT transmission services, repairs or replacements! If you start having trouble shifting or hear odd noises coming from your vehicle, AAMCO Colorado can diagnose your problem with our exclusive Transmission Multi-Point Inspection service. Schedule an appointment today with your local AAMCO Colorado service center and we’ll get your transmission repaired, maintained or rebuilt right the first time.
