How Does A Transmission Cooler Work?
A transmission cooler helps keep your transmission fluid cool, but how? Hot transmission fluid is sent from the transmission to your car’s radiator then it flows to the transmission cooler.
Circulating air moves over the cooler’s fins that lower the temperature of the fluid. The cooled transmission fluid is sent back into the transmission where the cycle starts all over again. Additionally, a transmission cooler can help regulate the temperature of your engine and power steering fluid as well.
Transmission coolers are commonly used for manual transmissions but can be installed in automatic transmissions as long as there is enough space. Transmission coolers are especially helpful if your car is towing heavy loads, overheats often or you experience a lot of stop and go traffic. There’s no need to even think about the cooler after installment because it runs as long as the engine is running and is continuously cooling your transmission fluid.
Our AAMCO Colorado mechanics are the transmission experts and are happy to help you make a decision about installing a transmission cooler. We can properly diagnose the health of your transmission and see if it requires any necessary maintenance or repairs. Schedule an appointment today.
What Kind Of Transmission Cooler Is Right For My Car?
There are several types of transmission coolers that are right for your vehicle depending on your transmission. To get the most effective results, choosing the biggest transmission cooler that can fit in your vehicle will be best.
The bigger the transmission cooler, the faster and more effectively it can cool down your transmission fluid. AAMCO Colorado can assist you in choosing the appropriate transmission cooler for your vehicle.
Additionally, Our Power Purge Transmission Fluid services includes a courtesy transmission Vehicle Courtesy Check which involves our mechanics assessing your transmission fluid health and levels to ensure your car’s transmission fluid is in good shape.
Transmission Cooler Types
Tube & Fin Coolers
Tube and fin coolers are older transmission coolers that aren’t as efficient but are less expensive and can work well in older cars. A tube weaves through the fins and the tube transfers the transmission fluid while the fins work to absorb the heat. This can be a good option if you have an older car and want something more inexpensive.
Plate & Fin Coolers
The plate & fin cooler has parallel plates that run across the cooler horizontally. The cooler itself almost appears to look like a radiator in appearance. The plate & fin cooler is more efficient than the tube & fin cooler because it is larger and has more surface area for more transmission fluid to cool on. The fluid flows through each of the plate rows that cools the fluid quicker and more efficiently.
Stacked Plate Coolers
The stacked plate cooler is the most modern and popular of coolers due to its’ efficiency. They appear similar to plate & fin coolers but have bigger turbulators that allows air to flow through the fluid faster and quickly cool down the fluid.
The stacked plate cooler forces fluid through the plates that in turn cool the transmission fluid most effective and quickest. Additionally, stacked plate coolers are easy to install and remove from your vehicle.
