The Electric Future is Fast Approaching
It’s a bitter pill to swallow for auto enthusiasts who love the sheer raw rumble of a combustion engine but the future of automobiles is electric. And as electric cars become more and more popular, one of the most common concerns arising among EV owners is how to maintain them. There’s a myth that Electric vehicles are, in fact, quite difficult to maintain, but according to reports, Electric vehicles will be cheaper than your typical combustion engine vehicle by 2025.
Unlike your typical combustion engine vehicle, Electric vehicles do not come with fuel filters, spark plugs, or require oil changes. So, what kind of maintenance does an electric vehicle require? With the Electric vehicle industry still in its infancy stage, maintaining an Electric vehicle is a bit of a Pandora’s box when it comes to its upkeep and maintenance.

Don’t Ignore your Electrical VEhicle
Keep your vehicle charging into the future, come into a local AAMCO Colorado location to keep up with your electric vehicle maintenance today.
Is it Cheaper to Repair My EV Compared to a Conventional Car?
Let’s face it, Electric vehicles come with fewer moving parts compared to your typical combustion engine vehicle, making them generally cheaper to service. While they don’t require oil changes or emission checks or come with spark plugs and fuel filters, electric vehicles are considerably pricier than regular combustion engine vehicles. Their main benefit and why they are considered a solid investment is the potential savings expected over a long period.
How Much Do I Need to Maintain My Electric Vehicle?
The benefits of owning an Electric vehicle are all out in the open, and it’s perhaps due to this reason, every other vehicle manufacturer will be unveiling its new line by the end of 2025. EV owners enjoy energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions for the environment, significant savings on operational cost, but unfortunately, when it comes to the cost of servicing, it’s still a bit of a grey area. The cost of servicing your Electric vehicle will largely depend on a few factors including:
- Your local auto repair service you use
- The make and model of your vehicle
- The terms of your warranty, for instance, capped servicing
- Is it’s a routine logbook service or major repair service like a battery replacement?
Maintaining an Electric Vehicle
Your electric car will need servicing at the same intervals, just like any other vehicle. And while they may not have as many moving parts as a regular car, it will still require tire service, brake fluid changes as well as windscreen wiper replacement. Therefore, when your Electric vehicle is due for service, it’s important to check into your local AAMCO Colorado electric car maintenance center for your regular car maintenance service.
Tire Rotation Service
Just like any other vehicle, EVs require tire rotation, and this service is more important for them since they have a heavy footing due to their huge batteries. They also exert a lot of torque on their wheels.
Brake Fluid Service
Most of the braking on an EV is by regenerative braking, and during this action, the normal mechanical brakes are not in use. However, Electric vehicles still come with your typical brake pads and discs, that work with the same hydraulic fluid found on your typical combustion engine vehicle. Over extensive use, you will still need to perform a brake fluid flush.
Coolant Service
Electric vehicles do not come with an engine; however, they still need coolant to cool down their massive batteries, which could otherwise be a potential fire hazard. The intervals for flushing EV coolants vary. For instance, Tesla Model 3 requires a coolant flush every four years or 50,000 miles while the Chevy Bolt requires the same flush for every 150,000 miles.
Brake Service
Apart from the brake fluid service, your Electric vehicle requires a brake pad and brake disc service periodically. Their service intervals mainly depend on how often, how hard you drive your vehicle and the regeneration settings on your vehicle for your local area terrain.
Battery Maintenance and Care
Your EV’s battery is comparable to a regular car’s engine when it comes to cost and value. For starters, it’s the heaviest assembly on the EV, a big factor when it comes to resale value and perhaps the most expensive component. Therefore, if you own an EV or are looking to buy one, take care of it like you would with a regular engine knowing that it could suffer damage sitting in too cold or too hot temperatures for too long. Owners are also advised to avoid letting their batteries go completely dead, or charging their vehicles too often or too much.
