Well, depending on what is wrong will determine the right cause of action. It’s also important to note that not all power steering problems will need extensive repair work. However, just like any other faulty component in your vehicle, a problematic steering wheel needs speedy action, saving time and money in the long run.
How Does the Power Steering Wheel Work?
The hydraulic system uses a pump that helps to build and supply the pressure. The drive control works using a rack and pinion system. Therefore, the pressure builds up from the pump and pushes up against the piston. When the wheel turns, the pressure builds and flows, which in turn forces the piston to move. This piston is also connected to the car’s steering mechanism. With the use of air from hydraulic pressure, the steering wheel can be manipulated by the driver.
The whole power steering mechanism in your car all comes down to a highly sensitized valve system. The valve is at rest when the steering wheel is straight, but when the driver turns it right or left, fluid begins to flow around the valves, through the reservoir and finally to the cylinder. The fluid will flow and move into different chambers depending on the direction that the wheel turns to control the gears. When the driver releases the steering wheel, it goes back to its neutral position.

How Will I Know My Power Steering Is Faulty?
Unlike other components in your vehicle, when your power steering is faulty, you’ll get plenty of warning signs. If you ignore these warning signs, the entire system could fail, or worse, end up in an accident that may not be covered by your insurance. If your steering wheel is exhibiting any of the following symptoms have your car checked by professional car repair experts such as one from AAMCO Colorado.
1. It’s extremely difficult to turn the wheel. Most modern vehicles today come with a power steering system; therefore, if you are having difficulty turning the wheel, it could indicate a fault in the system. Check your steering fluid reservoir; if it’s empty fill it up. In case the levels keep dropping, visit your mechanic.
2. Steering wheel vibration. Vibrations on your steering wheel could be due to alignment issues. However, steering wheel vibrations could also indicate a fault in the power steering. If there is a buildup of contaminants in the system, it could cause the steering wheel to pulsate of vibrate.
3. A slipping steering wheel. It’s yet another symptom of a failing steering wheel; it could mean a leakage in the system, a faulty pump, or loose steering belts.
4. Screeching noise when you turn the wheel. Screeching is commonly caused by a loose or worn out power steering belt. This belt connects to the power steering pump to the vehicle’s motor. The screeching sound occurs when there are low levels of power steering fluid.
What should I do in case my power steering fails while driving?
What happens when you miss all the signs of a failing power steering, and it suddenly fails mid-cruise? The most important thing to do in this situation is not to panic. Turn on your blinkers and honk your horn to alert other motorists you are experiencing drivability issues, then slowly try to maneuver your vehicle to the side or shoulders of the road.
Note that turning your vehicle will take much more effort than you are used to, and also remember to brake as you steer away from the road gradually. When you get to a halt, turn off the engine and then on again. In case the steering wheel turns without much effort, you could attempt to go to the mechanic. If the steering ability is gone, contact a tow service.
