1. Low or Dead Battery
A dead or low battery is one of the most common causes for a car breakdown. A dead battery will make it difficult to start your car’s engine and you may find yourself stuck wherever you are parked. Generally, your car’s battery will last 3-5 years, but this time could be shorter if you live in a place where it is extremely hot or extremely cold a lot of the time.
Be sure to have your battery checked by your mechanic, especially if it is over 3 years old. Warning signs that your battery could be failing include dimming headlights, dimmer cabin lights and features like power windows reacting slower than usual.
2. Engine Problems
Transmission trouble can start off as a strange sound or erratic performance – but eventually, lead to a total breakdown. If your car won’t move, there’s a good chance your transmission could be blown. Having your transmission regularly serviced, and your transmission fluid flushed at the suggested intervals will reduce stress-related wear and tear on your car’s transmission and help to prevent a breakdown.

3. Brake Trouble
Most of the time you can still drive your car with shot brakes, however, this is not recommended and extremely worn brake pads or rotors can make your car impossible to stop. This can lead to serious injury and damage to your car. If your brakes are shot, even if your car can still drive, this is effectively a breakdown since it is no longer safe to drive your car.
It is recommended to have your brakes pads, rotors and fluid levels checked twice a year. Typically your car will need to have the brake fluid changed every 2-3 years unless your car’s owner’s manual specifies something else, or you have a leak.
4. Flat Tire
A flat tire is probably the cause of a breakdown that we are all most familiar with – we’ve all had a flat tire at some point. It’s important to check your tire pressure, tread depth, and to look for any damage to your tire walls regularly to avoid a situation that could cause a breakdown.
5. Running Out of Gas
There isn’t much to say about this one, if your car runs out of gas it can’t power the engine and it can’t move. If you are running low on gas, don’t take your chances with trying to push it to a further away gas station, always stop for gas when you are able to avoid a breakdown.

really useful tips thanks for the article it was really helpful
It helps a lot when you bring up how your car’s engine problems are likely due to overheating if it happens to break down. Whenever my uncle drives for long periods of time, his car will occasionally shut down and force him to park on the side of the road, he hasn’t been able to identify the issue with his car yet. I think that it would be best to call a roadside vehicle repair service if this problem ever happens again.
I didn’t know that brakes that have significantly deteriorated may prevent your car from being able to stop. My wife and I recently got into a car accident when we accidentally rear-ended another vehicle when we were unable to stop at an intersection. We’ll consider finding someone that can help us repair our car soon.
